Later images showing the instrument from other angles helped investigate features that the frontal Cantigas views leave hidden, including body depth and the way a skin top could be attached and shaped. Evidence from Moroccan rabāb construction was also used where medieval images alone could not answer questions about internal structure.

The resulting Cantigas-rabab prototype was built as a functional reconstruction rather than as a claim to reproduce one lost instrument exactly.
